School Takeover Challenge

On Wednesday and Thursday this week (6-7 April 2022) we had an additional volunteer who came to us from Didcot Girls’ School as part of the National Takeover Challenge to help as part of the catering team in our Café@35.

The Takeover Challenge is a fun, hugely successful and exciting activity for children and young people across England to take over adult roles in the workplace – whether it’s a business or a voluntary organisation. The aim is to put children and young people into decision-making positions and encourages organisations and businesses to hear their views.

We had the privilege to be asked by Anna (who is also a Family Church member) if she could come and work alongside the regular volunteers in our Café@35 for two days. This we gladly agreed to and wow, were we pleased we did? You bet we were!

Anna worked exceptionally well, full of enthusiasm, always willing and very helpful throughout her time with us, picking up very quickly what her role was within the catering team. She confidently had a go at preparing food, plating up food orders, making drinks, serving customers etc, and even pointed out something that we had overlooked! A real gem – couldn’t fault her at all. And were we sad that the challenge came to an end so quickly? You bet we were!

We now have a poster saying ‘We’ve been taken over’ which you can now see on our noticeboard!
